What can I say that would capture the essence of Ian as I remember him. He was honest, kind, friendly, very intelligent, competitive, gave counsel freely and was very supportive. In short a leader in every sense of the word. He had time for others, strike that, always made time; was generous of spirit, never spared you from the truth, but always with a good deal of humour!
I always knew there was real depth to the man; character, charisma, intellect and humour. Rare that a person possesses all of these qualities and yet he did. His friends would tell you he was much admired, his adversaries would say he was much respected and admired.
I have known Ian for 45years, but because life takes us on different journeys, was not always present in his life, but knew him to be a true friend and more than that someone I looked up to. My deepest sympathies to Ian's family. I hope, in time, you can find some comfort in the memories you have of him.

Ian was true and trusted friend with whom I enjoyed many hours of companionship in his favourite watering holes or Ashbrooke where we played squash with many friends. Ian enjoyed his sport and we always shared a convivial drink (or 2 or 3) after a game of squash or a game of football. I could always rely on him for friendly advice and he always told it as it was. I deeply regret not spending more time with him when he was confined to the care home suffering as he did with Parkinsons. RIP Ian
